BMW Group Australia has welcomed the final members of its all-new X1 family, with the sDrive18d and sDrive20i arriving to expand the brand’s range of premium compact SAVs to four.

Available from $49,500*, the X1 sDrive18d and sDrive20i feature an extensive list of standard equipment, introducing hallmark BMW luxury, technology and innovation to an accessible price point.

Designed by Sydney-born Calvin Luk, the all-new BMW X1 is distinctly X-inspired, featuring an athletically-crafted front end and broad proportions. The second generation model is 53mm taller and 23mm wider, but 38mm shorter than its predecessor.

BMW Group Australia, Chief Executive Officer, Marc Werner, said the launch of BMW’s allnew X1 variants further strengthens the manufacturer’s offerings in the premium compact segment.

“A marked leap forward over its predecessor, the all-new BMW X1 redefines the model as it enters its second generation,” Werner said.

“With additional space, athletic styling and a fantastic range of standard equipment, the X1 delivers impressive levels of refinement and comfort for an active lifestyle.”

Developed on BMW’s front-wheel drive architecture with a transverse mounted engine, the all-new BMW X1 optimises space, delivering a capacious interior, expanded storage and increased levels of comfort.

With an elevated seating position, all-round visibility is improved, while rear passengers enjoy an extra 57mm of leg room. Luggage capacity increases to a segment leading 505 litres, expanding to 1,550 litres, aided by standard 40/40/40-split folding seats.

Equipped with xLine, LED headlights, automated tailgate and 18-inch light alloy wheels as standard, the all-new BMW X1 sDrive18d and sDrive20i also receives a wide array of active safety technology, including Rear View Camera, front and rear Park Distance Control, Parking Assistant and Driving Assistant.

Among the new additions to standard specification over the previous generation model, Driving Assistant is a camera-based system consisting of Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning and Pedestrian Warning with light city braking function.

BMW ConnectedDrive innovations also figure prominently, with Intelligent Emergency Call, TeleServices, ConnectedDrive Services, Remote Services and Real Time Traffic Information included across the range.

The BMW X1 sDrive20i model is powered by a 141 kW version of the new four-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine, whose peak torque of 280 Nm can also be accessed from just 1,250 rpm.

This power unit links up as standard with an eight-speed sports Steptronic transmission, driving the vehicle from 0-100km/h in 7.7 seconds, while average fuel consumption is 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres.

The diesel engine in the BMW X1 sDrive18d features turbocharging with variable turbine geometry and an injection system generating a maximum pressure of 2,000 bar.

Maximum output is up 5kW over the predecessor engine, and now stands at 110kW, while peak torque is 330Nm, accessible between 1,750rpm and 2,750rpm.

Fitted with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, the model accelerates from 0-100km/h in 9.2 seconds, and consumes 4.3 litres of fuel per 100km.

The chassis technology of the original X1 has been totally redeveloped for the new model and now comprises single-joint strut suspension at the front and a multi-link rear axle.

Aluminium swivel bearings, as well as axle carriers and control arms made from high strength steel, reduce weight and increase the rigidity of the front axle, which in turn helps to ensure an agile turn-in response and direction-changing precision.

The rear axle also employs a high proportion of high-strength steels. Tube-shaped anti-roll bars at the front and rear axle, innovative axle mounting and specially tuned elastokinematics contribute to the agility and ride comfort of the new BMW X1, as do the connection of the dampers to the body via sophisticated three-way support mounts.

All maintenance requirements for the BMW X1 range are controlled by the Condition Based Servicing (CBS) system.

With CBS, sensors and advanced algorithms monitor and calculate the conditions in which a vehicle is used, including mileage, time elapsed since its last service, fuel consumption and how a vehicle is driven.

Based on the information captured, maintenance requirements are determined, identifying whether an annual vehicle inspection or oil service is due.

Selected BMW service and maintenance costs can be covered by a single, one-off advance payment with BMW Service Inclusive (BSI), which is available in two packages: Basic or Plus.
