BMW Team SRM confirms full Australian GT Championship program

BMW Team SRM will compete in every round of both the 2016 CAMS Australian GT Championship and the 2016 CAMS Australian Endurance Championship.
With the first brand new BMW M6 GT3 now landed in Australia, BMW Team SRM and BMW Group Australia have elected to expand the 2016 program to include all six rounds of the CAMS Australian GT Championship.
That means the stunning M6 GT3 will make its competitive debut at next month’s Clipsal 500.
The ‘sprint’ calendar also includes rounds at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, Barbagallo Raceway in Western Australia, Phillip Island, Townsville, and Highlands Park in New Zealand.
BMW Team SRM will also compete in all four rounds of the CAMS Australian Endurance Championship, which features two 101-lap races in Australia (Phillip Island and Sydney Motorsport Park) and two in New Zealand (Hampton Downs and Highlands Park).
“I think we all got pretty excited when we found out we were allocated a car for January, and that moved the goal posts for us,” said BMW Team SRM owner and driver Steve Richards.
“It gave us the opportunity to work towards a full program for 2016, and it was an opportunity we didn’t want to miss. So we all put our heads together and made it happen.
“The extra races will be hugely beneficial when it comes to learning the idiosyncrasies of the new car, as well as how to best utilise the fantastic technical support we will have from Germany.
“The earlier we sink our teeth into the program, the better off we’ll be when it comes to those endurance races later in the year.”
BMW Team SRM and BMW Group Australia are also delighted to confirm that the M6 GT3 will run number 100 for the 2016 season, in celebration of the BMW Group’s 100-year anniversary.
“The arrival of the new M6 GT3 is a very big part of the centennial celebrations, and we have been able to confirm the number of the car with the Australian GT Championship organisers,” said Marc Werner, CEO of BMW Group Australia.
“This is the icing on the cake for us.

“I am proud to announce that the official number designation of the BMW Team SRM M6 GT3 will be vehicle number 100. We believe this is a perfect fit for BMW, emphasising our performance heritage and the motorsport DNA that is inherent in our brand.”

First BMW M6 GT3 lands in Australia

The first BMW M6 GT3 has touched down in Australia, with BMW Team SRM having now officially taken delivery of the brand new twin-turbo V8-powered racing car. The new-generation GT3 car is the first of its kind to land in Australia, and will compete as a factory-supported entry in GT racing under the BMW Team SRM banner this season.

The running of the BMW M6 GT3 program in Australia has been entrusted to motorsport legend Steve Richards, the reigning Bathurst 1000 winner. His SRM squad will also provide on-track support and parts supply when other M6 GT3s join the Australian GT field in the future.

According to Richards, this is the most exciting new car delivery he’s ever been involved in. “I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited,” said Richards.

“I’ve had a few new race cars in my time, but this one takes the cake. “We’re really lucky to have this program up and running with BMW Group Australia, and to be involved in the Australian GT Championship with something that is so new. I’m really looking forward to sinking my teeth into it.

“These GT3 cars have the same technical innovations as modern road cars, so to have things like anti-lock braking and traction control, not to mention the aerodynamics – that makes them as exciting to drive as you can get. “I just can’t wait to drive it.”

Marc Werner, CEO of BMW Group Australia, agreed that the arrival of the BMW M6 GT3 is an exciting moment. “The arrival of the first BMW M6 GT3 in Australia is a major milestone in the development of this brand new program,” said Werner.

“To have the car here, and see it in the flesh, is incredibly exciting. Welcoming the BMW M6 GT3 to the BMW family here in Australia is the perfect way to kick-start celebrations for our 100th year, and we can’t wait for the new car to hit the track for the first time.”

Richards will have his first taste of the BMW Team SRM M6 GT3 at the car’s debut test session at Winton next week. The all-new BMW M6 GT3 is powered by a BMW 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower turbo technology, and replaces the successful BMW Z4 GT3 as the brand’s top-level GT3-specification racer.

The new model made its international racing debut at the gruelling 24 Hours of Daytona recently, Michael Marsal, Markus Palttala, Maxime Martin, and Jesse Krohn teaming up to finish an impressive sixth in the GTD class.

Rare BMW M1 Procar to race at PI Classic

image134605_b image134604_b

  • Ultra rare BMW M1 Procar makes first Victorian circuit appearance
  • Large 100th Anniversary display by BMW Club

One of the world’s most desirable racing BMWs is heading to Phillip Island to help celebrate BMW’s 100th birthday at the 27th annual Classic Festival of Motorsport from March 11-13.
The Bowden Family’s newly-acquired 1979 BMW M1 Procar will join another 12 BMWs competing during the three day meeting – a record nine of them ex-JPS Team BMW Touring Cars.
There will also be further nine or so JPS road cars (another record) amongst more than 30 BMWs from early 2002 models to the latest M5s in a special Anniversary display by the BMW Club of Victoria.
The standout amongst the BMW drivers racing will be seven times Bathurst winner Jim Richards, who won the first two of his four Australian Touring Car titles in 1985 and 1987 at the wheel of BMW M cars.
Richards will face the starting lights five times over the weekend in the capacity grid Group C & A races driving an ex-Team JPS BMW 635 coupe now owned by New Zealand enthusiast Peter Sturgeon. The car has been painstakingly restored to the same Group C spec that Richards raced it originally in 1983 and 1984.
The track appearance of the former ‘Speed Star Wheels’ BMW M1 Procar in Chris Bowden’s hands is believed to be the first time one of BMW’s most famous Post War racing models has been on a Victorian circuit.

Two GTi models spearhead Peugeot’s refreshed 308 range in Australia

Peugeot Australia has launched two 308 GTi models after a 15 year absence of the GTi badge from the model in Australia.

The GTi models have been launched as the high-performance flagships for the 308 range, winner of the prestigious 2014 European Car of the Year.

More than just a badge and alloy wheels, the 308 GTi has been extensively developed by Peugeot Sport who are Peugeot’s in-house motorsport division that boasts a wealth of expertise developing high-performance road and race cars.

The 308 GTi is the fourth road car project in three years following the acclaimed RCZ R, 208 GTi 30th and 208 GTi by Peugeot Sport.

Underpinning the two model attack is Peugeot’s proven high-output 1.6-litre THP petrol engine, with two power outputs depending on the model, with 184kW (250hp) in the GTi 250 and 200kW (270hp) in the GTi 270, both paired exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission.

Peugeot’s latest hot hatch is encased in a modern exterior style that takes the marque’s now-familiar design philosophy and adds a touch of aggression.
