Two stunning restored ‘Split Window’ VW ‘Kombis’
Very cool Series I VW Karmann Ghia
A comprehensively-restored 1967 ‘Split Window’ Volkswagen Microbus that looks as good underneath as its stunning upper bodywork is being offered with ‘no reserve’ at Shannons Summer Auction in Melbourne on Monday (November 23).
The two-owner, Australian-assembled and right hand drive 11-window Kombi enjoyed just one long-term owner from new before being acquired by its current keeper around 10 years ago.
The VW’s restorations since – most of it carried out professionally by marque experts – has resulted in what Shannons believe to be one of Australia’s finest Kombis. According to the vendor, it has covered little over 310 miles since its completion and has never been driven in the rain.
With early Kombis around the world achieving record prices, Shannons conservatively expect this exceptional example to sell with ‘no reserve’ on Monday in the $60,000-$80,000 range.
Almost as desirable in the Auction for early VW commercial collectors is an Australian-built, original right hand drive 1961 Kombi Split Window Transporter.
This very cool classic ‘Ute’ was completely restored to a high standard in 2001-2002 and its glossy black paintwork and grey trim both still present very well, according to Shannons.
The VW retains its correct 6-volt electrical system, along with its original reduction box rear end and gearbox, but currently rides on 15-inch EMPI Vintage BRM wheels.
Shannons predict a result in the $45,000-$55,000 range because of its collectability and street-smart appearance.
Another black VW that has attracted a lot of pre-auction interest is a ‘show condition’ 1964 Karmann Ghia Coupe that features a 1300cc engine and a fresh interior.
Formerly the subject of a five-year bare metal restoration, the Karmann Ghia is expected to be in high demand with VW enthusiasts and collectors at its estimated selling range of $30,000-$36,000.
The three VWs are amongst 42 vehicles in Shannons Melbourne Summer Auction– 12 offered with ‘no reserve’.
